Today at lunch, the topic of discussion was home decor and we were discussing which might have been the most common carpet in people's homes. We all agreed on the same answer - Rag rug. The more we talked about it the more curious I became. So I began to think and started to check out some more information about the rag rug. I myself associate rag rug with stripes, checkered, summer, cottage, and croft. But I think the reason most people have seen a rag rug in someone's home is that the rug is so functional. The rag rug is durable in quality but also in style. It is also practical and requires no complicated care. It´s enough that you shake it off or wash it with soap and a root brush. In the past, the rug was washed in the summer by the lake on a rocky hill. When rinsed off properly, they hung up and hung them lengthwise so the water ran off along the colored stripes to prevent any overcoating. Even today this is the best method of drying rag rugs.
Rag rugs on the floors are actually no old phenomenon in people's homes. Only around 1870 the rugs were brought to use. But trawls came much earlier, already in the 1700s. They were used in the bed either as ornamental or as protection. People simply used it to not get stuck on the body by the straw.
Only in about 1860-70s, the rag rug ended up on the floor. It was then made of patches, hair yarn, old nets that were unable to be used by fishermen any more, as well as straw, hay, and bark. When the housing standard was raised in the mid-1800s and people got more rooms, they began to decorate the floors with rugs. This led to that the men had to stop spitting on the floors and the spit box made entry into peoples homes. In the beginning, the rugs were in the hall. Only later they came into the kitchen, and especially at holidays. After the holiday they rolled it together and they were taken away. You would not unnecessarily want your carpet to get dirty. Later in time, the rugs were also used for the sake of floor coverings, preferably overlapping because it would be easy to sweep. The rugs also made that the women did not have to sweep the floors as often, which was positive.
The rag rug was born out of the need for economy. Everything should be taken care of, nothing is being left out and thrown away. This is something we should try to embrace more today. I like the rag rugs recycling function. You should try to take care of it as much as possible before throwing it away. MORE RAG RUGS TO THE PEOPLE FOR THE SAKE OF THE ENVIRONMENT!!
